The Ridgewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps (RVAC) was incorporated under the
not-for-profit corporation law of New York State in October of 1974 and began service in September of 1975. The RVAC is your community ambulance service for emergency calls, transport of the sick and injured, free loan of
patient-assist equipment and
low-cost CPR and first aid training.
The concept of establishing the RVAC began with a group of concerned residents whose goal was to give our community the extra benefits of a community ambulance service.
In March of 1989, the RVAC was authorized to expand its area of service to include West Maspeth and Wyckoff Heights. On June 22, 1995, we received authorization to begin cardiac defibrillation service.

The Membership of RVAC consists of interested
multi-national men and women of the New York area.
Community residents of age 14 years or older are invited to join the RVAC team. Our younger members can learn CPR and first aid, while members who are at least 16 to 17 years old can take classes to become a Certified First Responder (CFR) — one of the
entry-level positions of the Emergency Medical Services. Becoming a CFR makes you eligible to work on the ambulance. Adults are eligible to become ambulance dispatchers, EMT's and/or drivers.
RVAC provides a highly challenging and rewarding volunteer experience — as well as one that can help with a future career. Several of our members have found secure employment with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), as well as with private ambulance services. For them, the Ridgewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps was an important stepping stone to obtaining their current positions.
